Hospice is quality, compassionate care for patients struggling with a life-limiting illness. Once a patient is enrolled in hospice, we aim to enhance quality of life by controlling pain and physical symptoms, respecting the patient’s wishes and providing emotional and spiritual support.

Hospice provides a family-centered approach that includes a team of doctors, nurses, social workers, counselors and trained volunteers. Together, these professionals work to achieve the goal of hospice care—to improve the quality of life at the end of life.

Anyone diagnosed with a terminal illness or a life expectancy of six months or less is eligible for hospice care. However, Hospice of Southern Maine does allow for curative care through the Living Well program.

Hospice of Southern Maine is the only program in southern Maine with an inpatient hospice facility. The 18-bed Gosnell Memorial Hospice House was designed to meet the unique needs of patients with a life-limiting illness.

The Gosnell Memorial Hospice House is not a hospital, nursing home or rehabilitation center. It is a comforting, homelike atmosphere where you and your loved ones can share time together.

Hospice of Southern Maine is a nonprofit, free-standing Medicare-certified organization. Your physician can continue to direct your care, working with hospice staff who provide ongoing services.
